Baby Alive

Baby Alive was a realistic baby doll originally made by Kenner in 1973. Kenner also made successful toys such as the Easy-Bake Oven and Spirograph. The Baby Alive doll came in just her sunsuit and hair ribbon and had a whole set of accessories so that you could look after her.

Most important were the nappies/diapers because Baby Alive doll actually ate and drank like a real baby. When you gave Baby Alive her diet of a special food mixture and water it would inevitably end up in her nappy so that you could have ‘fun’ changing it.

Care was needed when mixing the food mixture, especially in the newer models and you would have to mix up a packet of Baby Alive food with exactly 15ml of water for it to work properly. As well as the sachets of food, Baby Alive came bundled with a special dish and spoon as well as a small water bottle. After you gave her some food you needed to give her a small amount of water to ‘wash it through’.

When you gave Baby Alive a teaspoon of the special food mixture, rather than just wash down she would ‘chew’ her food with a realistic mouth movement. You could also make her suck her thumb by pressing her thumb against her lower lip for a few seconds. When you ran out of special Baby Alive food and nappies it was possible to purchase the sachets and spare nappies separately.

My cousin Caroline had a Baby Alive. I'm a guy, and had a sister and three girl cousins so I got to secretly play with all their dolls. I remember us mixing the pink food for her and feeding it to her in my aunty Nan's kitchen then waiting for her to poop her nappy while we played with ny other cousins Penny Puppy Walker doll (loved that doll too). Brilliant memories of school holidays and innocent times.

Your little girl will love experiencing the fun of real babies when she helps this doll brush her teeth and get all ready for a nighttime snuggle. She can give her baby doll a bottle, change her diaper when she wets, and then get her all dressed in her adorable clothes. New Baby Alive dolls (lots of choices!) are available currently in the US. No idea why I can't find them in the UK. Anyone have an idea of where I can buy these in Europe?? Thanks!

I remember my baby alive around 1977. I use to feed it real baby food because my mom would not buy the special stuff. I am now buying the new baby alive doll for my daughter. Boy, am I going to have just as much fun as I did when I was 5 just now with my daughter. Judy

I still have my original 1973 Baby Alive, Crissy and Kerry dolls. I'm 42 years old now and there in pretty good shape since I started a collection when I was very young. My mom had some special shelves built in my room so to display them and so they were well taken care of. Those 3 were my favorites although I still have many other collections of Vogue dolls as well from the 70's. They are now displayed in my two daughter's rooms.

I got my Baby Alive doll sometime in the 70's. When I used up the last packet of baby food I fed her my bacon sandwich. I was really upset when I discovered she could no longer soil her nappy or the potty. I guess I then created 'Baby Blocked Up'!
