A Ghost story for Christmas

This Memory is looking a little short on nostalgia! Have you got anything you could add?

This was a yearly spooky drama that went out every Christmas from about 1972 to 1978. One episode was called 'Stigma' about a mother who bled to death and was aired on the 28th of December 1977. Another episode was called 'The Signalman' that had Denholm Elliot in it who was confronted by the spectre at the end.

I remember listening to A Box of Delights on one Christmas eve on the radio but never heard the end due to falling asleep !

This was a highlight of Christmas Eve for me - the best ones were by M R James. 'Whistle and I'll Come to You, My Lad' starring Michael Hordern was the scariest thing I'd ever seen. I wanted to sleep with the light on. I also remember 'A Warning to the Curious' and 'The Stalls of Barchester'. They were sooo atmospheric, and absolutely terrifying. The ghost was usually unseen, or just suggested as a shape on the horizon. They were black and white (they were on our telly, anyway!!) which somehow adds to the spookiness. Ghost stories in colour just don't seem as frightening. I wish they would repeat them. They were real classics.

The Signalman was based on the short story by Dickens. Most of them, however, were based on the Ghost Stories of an Antiquary by M R James. They remain amongst the best ever written. I remember "Oh whistle and I'll come to you my lad" with Sir Michael Horden, the Treasure of Abbot Thomas, and a Warning to the Curious.
