Alice in Chains

A.I.C. were, and still are, my fave Metal band. I went to watch them at the Manchester Academy years ago. They played excellently, I got well drunk, bought loads of merchandise.... it was one of the best night out I've EVER had. Then later on that week, the Manchester Evening News published an interview with them. In it, they said that their last gig, (the one that I went to and loved,) was their worst gig ever. The crowd were unresponsive, they couldn't wait to get off stage and they'd never play there ever again. Then, later that year, Layne Staley (the singer) died of an overdose. So I saw one of A.I.C.s last EVER gigs.

The original poster is clearly a liar. Layne staley last played the uk in 1994, he then died in 2002 after being a recluse for 5 or 6 years.

So in the states it was Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and eventually the likes of Soundgarden dominating the radios. AIC in my opinion was in certain respects better and more influential to the over all way the grunge era led the direction of hard rock through today. Layne's voice and the lyrics which tended to focus on the pain of a messed up childhood and heroin addiction, created a melancholy, and yet powerfully impassioned vocal presence. As for the music, well, it was minor chords, layered over sweet solos, and always a close attention to detailed rhythms. They went beyond Nirvana musically, appealed to the self-degradation of teenage angst moreso then Pearl Jam, and never sold out like Soundgarden. Dirt is still in my playlist for great 90s albums
