Alpine Soft Drinks

The Alpine Soft Drinks man used to come round in a sort of converted milk float every week (Wednesday or Thursday), and sell these street by street back in the mid seventies. Alpine Soft Drinks were closer to Corona than Cresta, but they came in the most vivid colours and left you hyper all evening. Alpine Soft Drinks came in the usual flavours - Orangeade, Limeade, Lemonade, Cola, Cherryade and of course Dandelion and Burdock. As someone who worked for them for a short time I can remember one of the top sellers was American Cream Soda.

I worked in the Laindon Branch making the fizzy pop, orange juice and black currant juce. We had some fun days in there i can tell you! One afternoon i let off a stink bomb near a drain, and mick (our manager) had to stop production for over an hour to call Dino-rod out. He was none to pleased as we used to turn out 1000 bottles of pop every 15 mins! I felt so bad!!! We were allowed to take 2 bottles home on a friday so we used to put it through the syruper twice to give a stronger flavour, it was yummy!!!

Silverwheels , Hi Joe, you must have been at Beeston at the same time as me do you remember a lorry being driven into the office and the safe being moved good job they didn,t know the money was in the floor safe, there was also a supervisor from Rotherham working there. I seem to remember going out one night for a drink with some of the lads as one of the drivers was going to get married. He had a little too much to drink and on the way home climbed onto the top of a bus stop shelter when asked what he was doing by a policeman his reply was I,m waiting for a double decker.

Your name rings a bell Joe, I was at Beeston from 1978 to 1981 before promotion and off to Rotherham. Here's some names for ya. Alex Webster, John Saunders, Nev Powell, Paul Smith, Gordon (from Leics depot), and John Boulton. I can remember many more faces but their names escape me.... I started on Round 8 (Bulwell/Hucknall/Kirkby in Ashfield-Mansfield Woodhouse/Ilkeston/Bestwood Park Est. Later had Round 7 with Nev as my van lad, did Mapperley/Netherfield-Carlton-Gedling-Colwick/West Bridgeford/Lenton Boulevard/Broxtowe-Strelley.

I remember the alpine man. Mum called him "the pop man". He used to come on Friday afternoons. Some weeks nan used to say "you can have the money back off the pop bottles kids" and we used to ask the pop man for the cash rather than have it taken off the pop and make ourselves about 5p!!!!!!! We had lemonade, orangeade, limeade, coke and a pineapple flavour. I remember trying Dandelion and Burdock and hated it - have never been able to try that flavour since!!!!!!!! Ginger was also vile. We used to love the pop man - Friday afternoons were very exciting :)
