Bobby Brewster

I'm remember going to the library every week to read the next one in the series of Bobby Brewster books. They were written by children's author H.E. Todd, and the stories were fantastic - many of them involved things in Bobby's house coming to life and chatting to him.

The Bobby Brewster series appeared on Jackanory when Todds read them to the audience in 1969 and 1970. They even became a dial and listen bedtime story service provided by BT in the 80s (why don't they bring that back!).

Stories in the series included: Bobby Brewster And The Winker's Club, Bobby Brewster's Conker, Bobby Brewster And Her Mommy and Bobby Brewster's Hiccups.

I too loved visiting the library for my favourite books which were the Bobby Brewster collection. None of my friends have heard of these so I was beginning to think that I must have been the only child reading these wonderful books. Glad to see I’m not alone.

H E Todd was a wonderfully avuncular man who visited our primary school to read his stories. I went on to buy (or badger my mum to buy) many of the books, so I guess he had a shrewd business sense as well.

I loved these books as a kid. I read every single one that I could find at my local library and then I read them all again. It all seemed very magical.

How is the archive going. I have managed to source almost all Bobby Brewster books in hardback for my daughter.
