What is it about a toy telephone? From the cheap ones you could buy for a week's pocket money to the toy smart phones of today they can give hours and hours of fun and imaginative play! the Chatter Telephone, made by Fisher Price, is one of those classic, simple toys which has stood the test of time. Created in 1962 it is still available today. The one we had in the 70s was made of plastic on a wooden wheeled base. It had a smiling face on the front and a rotary dial which, when turned, could be made to sound like the kind of ringing telephone that was available before the awful Trim Phone put paid to the bell forever! When you wheeled the phone along one way it made a kind of babbling sound rather hard to describe and when you wheeled it another a different chattering sound was made. As the phone moved along the googly eyes on the face in front when up and down in the weirdest but most satisfying way. The Chatter Telephone was Fisher Price's top selling toy in the 60s and 70s and there was such opposition when the rotary dial was replaced with light up push buttons that the dial had to be brought back. These days you can buy two versions, a vintage and a modern version.
