Dad's Army

This Memory is looking a little short on nostalgia! Have you got anything you could add?

An absolute classic comedy still very popular today. Dad's Army was a comedy about the antics of the British Home Guard who are led by Capt. Mainwaring (Arthur Lowe) and his long suffering second in command, Sgnt Wilson (John Le Mesurier) with each recruit having some comical "quirke".

For me, the best episode was where Mainwaring's brother (also played by Arthur Lowe) came to Warminton on sea. He was a drunk and in many ways the opposite of the Captain. Private Frazer found out a lot about the captain from him thus debunking many of the Mainwaring myths.

One of my favourite ever TV comedies. Bill Pertwee starred as the eternally jealous ARP warden, who never missed a trick to get ne over on Mainwaring. John Laurie was dour undertaker Private Fraser, with Ian lavender as Pike, the youngest member of the platoon and a complete mummy's boy. My favourite character was Private Walker, the soldier spiv!

Loved the start, the arrows with the flags and the theme tune, despite not realising the significance of them ( I was only about 8 !) . The show itself went over my head at the time.

This was my dad's favourite sitcom. I didn't understand it as a child and he would explain what the home guard was. I remember laughing together as we watched this, it was one of the few times in our house that my mum did not get to watch her truly awful soaps every evening. My childhood favourite and the episode I remember most fondly was Jones' van racing around the countryside full of German officers. Now, 40 years later I am still excited waiting for the next BBC DVD release of this, the greatest sitcom ever made. Are you sure that's wise? Stupid Boy! Now I also have all the radio shows too, in fact, the disk is never removed from my mp3 player!
