Deep Purple

Deep Purple mut have been going for about 30 years at least. They're like the definitive hard rock band.

Sadly, although they've recorded loads of really catchy, good hard rock type tunes, they're mostly known because of a tune called "Smoke on the Water", about a time when they were in Geneva and the recording studio caught fire.

Apparently there was (*adopts an air-guitar pose....) "Smoooookkkke on the waaaaaa-terrrrrrrrrr....." Dah dah daaaaaah, dah dah da daaaaaahhh......

Rock 'n' Roll I s'pose.

I thought 'Smoke On The Water' was about the Montreux rock Festival, when the stage and it's environs were burnt down by an idiot who fired a flare gun. Love their early stuff, although they tended to go downhill after Blackmore was replaced by Frances Coverdale (who went on to form Whitesnake). 'Burn' is their last decent album, from '74- I'll always associate them with the early '70s and the kind of supernatural occult-rock that was popular back then.
