Don McLean

Contributing to society one of the best and most loved songs of all time ("American Pie"), Don McLean made sure he became more than just a footnote in music history. To this day, people still theorize that the song is a tribute to the Big Bopper, Richie Valens, and Buddy Holly (although others will say it actually encompassed the lives and definition of teenagers growing up in that era). Whatever the case may be, Don McLean did well with this one.

The full song covered both sides of a 7" single, and yes it was about the loss of Buddy Holly, and Don's reaction to it, can't agree with you about the Maddie cover though, thought it was cr*p and she should be ashamed of herself, but I'd suppose that's a little short-sighted of me, of all the dodgy things she's done, I'd imagine that embarrasment over a cr*p cover version isn't even in the top 10

How many verses did that song have?? Still love it (& Madge didn't do too bad a cover!) Bought a Van Gogh print the other day - I recalled the lyrics to "Vincent" & realised just how evocative Don's songs were.
