Dr Marten Boots

Dr Marten's were the favoured boots of the Skinhead and Bootboy movements. Dr Martens now come in many styles but the best, in my opinion, were 'cherry red' eight or ten hole. Airwair (that is eight or ten eyelets each side of the boot) occasionally could be found in eleven holes if you were lucky. The early versions were tan, but rub a tin of polish in and they soon changed to that favoured oxblood/cherry red) Dr Marten boots were best worn with coloured laces. Most popular was red or yellow, but other colours were also worn. Hawkins Astronauts were also very smart in a deep oxblood colour.

I never really liked Dr Martens Boots...too clunky for my taste. I thought their sandals that were popular a few years ago were hideous. But some of these colorful ones I like. They fall into the clothes as fun category.

In the early seventies my mum took us to get new shoes for school and my 2 older brothers got Doc Martens. I wanted the same but they didn't come in my size so I got a pair of Major Domos instead. They were known somewhat disparagingly as "Mothercare Martens" I loved them though. They were ox blood red and we used to spend ages polishing them.
