On 27 October 1986 BBC 1 launched their new daytime service, pitched at stay-at-homes such as housewives and the unemployed (maybe the Thatcher government wasn't that worried about people getting on their bikes and looking for work). Part of this new schedule was Neighbours - which grew into a much bigger phenomenon - but at 10.55 was the Ronseal-titled Five To Eleven, a poetry reading given by actors such as Joanna Lumley, Peter Barkworth, Edward Petherbridge and, if memory serves, Roger McGough. It was in TV terms a five minute time-out, a chance to slow the pace somewhat and pause for reflection. It ran for (I think) four years.
