Gary Numan

This Memory is looking a little short on nostalgia! Have you got anything you could add?

Gary Numan, real name Gary Webb, is known as the Granfather of Electronica and had a number one hit with "Are Friends Electric" in 1979. He's still going strong today and has had bands like NIN and Marilyn Manson, amongst others, do covers of his songs.

I thought that 'Are Friends Electric' came out in '78 rather than '79? His band was called 'Tubeway Army', the line-up used to change regularly. He has also done a remarkable synth version of Eric Satie's 'Gymnopodie' series of classic piano pieces. As well as being a master electronic musician, Gary is also a qualified helicopter pilot!

Dancing at a Numan concert resulted in a dislocated knee & I was stretchered out of Hammersmith Apollo in full (pre) Goth gear. I worked for Our Price Records, where TIK & TOK (the support act) were visiting the next day. I tried to get in on the bus & with crutches to get them to sign my cast - but I missed them, darn!!

I saw Gary Numan twice in the late 70's at Hammersmith. It was just great and very cutting-edge at the time. On the tube to the gig there were loads of Numan clones!
