Gus Honeybun

This Memory is looking a little short on nostalgia! Have you got anything you could add?

Gus Honeybun was the original Gordon the Gopher. Basically Gus Honeybun was a rabbit who bobbed up and down and read out birthday cards and went and switched on different coloured lights. Gus Honeybun could only be seen on Devon and Cornish TV.

Plus, in the Eighties they sometimes left Children's ITV early down there to accommodate Gus! The rebels.

Gus was the mascot of both Westward TV and TSW, and was a rare treat on family holidays to Cornwall! On TSW's last day they showed him being taken out and released into the wild, with a family of puppet rabbits waiting for him! He's since reappeared at Flambards and on Atlantic FM (not many puppets have the talent for a successful career on radio). Westcountry Television replaced Gus Honeybun's Magic Birthdays with Birthday People. Gus's 1980s theme song was composed by Ed Welch. In addition to birthday hops, Gus at one time also had a "magic button" which he could press to make the background change, via blue-screen I think.

I remember back in the sixties, when Augustus J. Honeybun was vigorously performing the bunny hop. His head came off. Quick exit one embarrassed buck.

My god i remember that all i wanted was for Gus to do the bunny hops for me but he didn't. All i got was a post-card saying happy birthday. Which was nice but my younger sister destroyed it.

Gus Honeybun came to my 4th birthday party, many years ago. All I can remember is that all the children ran behind his box and grabbed at his strings. Poor Gus had to be carried out. A friend of mine is now so jealous, since he knew of Gus too, but cannot deal with the fact that Gus came to my birthday bash. The closet my friend has gotten Gus is by sadly copying pictures from the internet and pretending to speak to him on the phone!!!

I remember Gus Honeybun on Westward TV as the ITV station was known then for the West Country. I had my name read out on my ninth birthday by Gus honeybun and I think I remember him doing 9 bunny hops afterwards.
