Kunzel Cakes

This Memory is looking a little short on nostalgia! Have you got anything you could add?

I can remember my parents used to order Kunzel Cakes on a thursday night in Carters in Ebbw Vale. We would have them delivered on a Friday evening. Me and my brother would eat the cakes and then fill the chocolate boats with milk and drink from them all evening - lovely !

Oh yes they were just the best, haven’t had anything even near it since, so unfortunately will just have to stay a lovely memory.

My kunzel cakes are a success! As delicious as I remember them being all those years ago. Here's a photo of them on my Flickr photostream https://www.flickr.com/photos/finlap/37123554261/in/dateposted/

I loved kunzel cakes. I've looked at this thread before during my quest for a kunzel cake recipe, today I finally got around to experimenting with my own ideas. As I write, the chocolate shells are in the fridge, the sponges are cooling and the buttercream awaits whisking. for this first attempt I chose milk chocolate (good quality), made a genoese sponge and I'm trying german buttercream which I've never made before. I also thought of trying a swiss meringue buttercream; maybe that would be more like the original as the owner of kunzel cakes was from Switzerland. I used a smooth sided silicon friand mould to make the chocolate cups - the most fiiddly part. If I make them again I'll probably buy ready made chocolate cups. I'll let you know what they taste like.

I've even started a new thread a while ago as I wasn't aware of this one till now . Maybe we should start a petition to get them back on our shelves . In the meantime has anyone got any photos of them individually and / or the packaging . Finally a recipe would be great !!!

Kunzel cakes were a special treat as a child. My parents lived in Oldbury during the war, so I imagine they met them there. Only occasionally could you get them in Peckham (south London) in the 1950's. I loved them.

Glad to see other people remember them too! We always had them on a Friday night after mum had been to the supermarket. Watching Its a Knockout. I'd love to taste them again, along with Cremola Foam!

How lovely they were. Recently have been thinking about them and it was nice to see so many comments and know that I am not alone with my sweet memories of late 1950,s.

I've been dreaming of these over the last few weeks, back in 1964 they could be purchased from a bakery near to our school. These were special treat cakes, I would dearly like to be able to make them, is there a receipt out there? The best cakes ever.
