Little People

Little wooden and plastic dolls that had no legs, just a round post. They fitted into their custom-made cars and chairs.

I remember I had the whole family pictured above.

The original Little People were introduced by Fisher Price in 1959 and always had the same round head and elongated, two-inch high bodies. There were several different Little People series including the Jumbo Little People, that were over three inches tall, the Construction Series (that came complete with hard hats), Woodsies (forest animals) and Chunky Little People.

My younger brother had the Fisher-Price play people (as they used to be called) school, and my little sister had the camper van. We used to play with them for days at a time in school holidays.

My brother was born in 1981 and got tons of these toys when he was about 2 years old. He had the house, tree house, plane, bus that bobbed up and down as you pushed it along and loads more. I always prefered the people with the plastic bodies over the wooden ones though. I still have a large plastic yellow people and will pass it down to my kids when I'm old.

Much of my early childhood was played with Little People. Most of the playsets were lend-me-downs from my brother, but I got my own Little People Castle. Did anyone else have that? It was so cool because it came with secret traps including a passage-way behind the curving staircase.
