Loon pants

This Memory is looking a little short on nostalgia! Have you got anything you could add?

All the rage in the 70s, loons were low-slung trousers, skin-tight down to the knee and then flared out like a pair of parachutes. A bit like bell-bottoms or flares, no Hippy worth his salt failed to own a pair, whether in velvet, corduroy or tartan!

I first bought a pair of Loon pants in 1967. I'd moved to a little village in the cotswolds & I went to the boutique & asked if they had any, as I'd seen some in a magazine. The lady went upstairs and rooted out an old metal box, and there was just one pair in there. and in my size. I used to wear them with a cheesecloth top, tied under the bust. I wore them till they fell apart! By the 70s, stirrup trousers, or ski pants, had come into fashion.

Me had so many pairs of loons in early 1970s they were cheap about £6 a pair but after so many washes the backside would rip most embarrassing if you were out

Me and my mate, Dave Smith, got some (probably from Eccles market, not sure); one pair was bright yellow and the other bright red. Feeling a little self-conscious, but determined to be avant- gard, we marched up towards Liverpool Road in Irlam. As we approached the main road we heard a loud wolf-whistle, from a passing motorist! We stopped, looked at each other, turned tail and ran home. After that we went to the chemist and bought some brown dye, lol!

I loved the loons - had black, purple and dark green colours. Used to wear mine with grandpa vests, (usually tie-dye or plain black) with a grey/blue fringed suede bag slung on my shoulder. Used to think I looked really cool on the train to Romford Market on a Saturday.

Me & my girlfriend each had a couple of pairs in the late 60s, early 70s. I am 6ft 3in tall and in those days I was skinny as a rake. We both had long curly hair and wore them with tie dyed granddad vests, knee length boots and in the winter an old Air Raid Wardens overcoat.

You had to be slim to look good. I was very tall. I loved them. They were great with your green flash plimsolls. I was no hippie. They were a great alternative to Levi and Lee Rider jeans (then about £4 a pair) as you could afford more pairs. Lees were more expensive than Levi's in our area and considered a little more cool. I remember as a shallow teen being shocked to find that in parts of the country Wranglers were considered to be THE jeans. We thought they were for dorks ( or whatever we called them in those days);-)

Loons actually became main stream not just for hippies. The could also have a split knee to provide 2 different colours. I was working in a boutique in M'bro in 1972, when they were £2.50 a pair!
