Marathon Bar

This Memory is looking a little short on nostalgia! Have you got anything you could add?

Before the UK went all American and European, we had the great Marathon Bar, and yes, it did really satisfy!

I am sure that I am not alone when I still refuse to call them the s... word. No, they will forever be Marathons, like Opal Fruits will always be Opal Fruits, not star whatever; but that is another story.

Yes me too it will always be a marathon bar even if it is much smaller than what it used to be. I could never understand why they called it the S word. Someone told me it was because it was known as the S word in other countrys. I have to say i went to many other countrys at the time & i never saw it called anything else than Marathon. :-)

490 BC - the Greeks defeated the Persian army at the battle of Snickers - doesn't sound right does it? BTW - the 8 inches of braided caramel & chocolate was (& still is, albeit a lot smaller) called Curly Wurly in the UK. It was banned in Ireland until 1979 - don't ask me why. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curly_Wurly

marathon changed its name to snickers in 1987 i think, and can remember feeling angry about it! an advert in 72or 73 had a man in a space suit who shot toward the sky after taking a bite i can vaguely remember.

"What has a hazelnut in every bite? SQUIRREL SH*T" Yes it was Topic with that advert but as schoolkids we couldn't resist changing it a bit. We were all a bit miffed when they changed the name from 'Marathon' to 'S******s' all in the name of harmonisation...

The Marathon Bar was a full eight inches of braided chocolate and caramel. Introduced in 1973, the bar stood out, thanks to its bright-red package and gargantuan length. Inch markings printed on the wrapper showed that it was as long as it claimed. (The length was the result of its braided shape; it didn't weigh more than standard candy bars.) When sales didn't meet expectations, Mars Inc., took it off the shelves in 1981. Damn.. I miss these candy bars
