Mary, Mungo And Midge

It was about a very middle-class little girl (Mary) and her dog (Mungo) who walked around with what I think was a mouse (Midge) on his head! I can clearly remember is that they always went into a lift, when Midge would stand on Mungo's nose to operate the lift button, so they must have lived in a flat. The series was narrated by BBC newsreader Richard Baker (with the exception of Mary's voice!). Please say if you remember it, so I don't think I've lost the plot...

Of COURSE I remember it, it was a great favourite of mine. The trio lived on the top floor of a towerblock (which was very clean, spacious and elegant, more like an upmarket '60s apartment building in Cyprus than an inner-city high rise). Although Mary had parents, they never appeared in the show, leaving Mungo and Midge as her main companions (how she as allowed to keep animals in a towerblock was never made plain). Midge was a little tinker, always getting up to mischief and having to be rescued by the other two- he also played the flute. The lift descent to the ground floor was always followed by Mungo saying "We must always wait to make sure the lift door is shut" - why this was necessary is anybody's guess! I used to fancy Mary as a child, she seemed like my ideal girlfriend- sexy Millicent Martin hairdo and all. The trio also appeared as a comic strip in 'Pippin' comic.

They used to have adventures and there was always the same lift scene where you counted down the floors!
