Mediterranean was a Parker Bros. board game set in ancient times around the Mediterranean Sea.
There were four empires; Rome, Constantinople, Egypt and Carthage, I think. Each empire in 'Mediterranean' had a capital and several other cities. Each army consisted of four infantry, one cavalry and one elephant. Each turn you could move one unit to an adjacent city (two for cavalry). If an enemy unit was occupying the city a battle was fought. This was done using playing cards. Each player in the battle selected two cards from his hand. Cavalry doubled the lowest value card and elephants doubled the higher value card, highest total winning the battle.
The real trick to winning Mediterranean was careful use of the cards in your hand.
