Peter and Jane books

Peter and Jane books were designed to get children reading. The series of books used the repetition method of teaching, introducing new words slowly, ie.:

Peter and Jane
Jane and Peter
This is Peter
This is Jane

... you get the idea!

I can remember a dog, a tree, a ball and 'Mother and Father' being involved somewhere too.

There were 36 Peter and Jane books in the series: 12 themed stories with 3 levels in each theme.

I remember one book where they went to the beach and the conversation goes like this 'look look says Jane, look look Peter look, have a look, come and look, Peter has a look'. New word: LOOK.

The Peter & Jane books were published by Ladybird. I remember having to read these at school when I started in 1970. I got through them at a bout twice the rate of everyone else because my mother had taught me to read before I started school.

I remember having similar books at school. Red books to start then you moved onto green books. Don't know if they were Peter and Jane, or indeed Janet and John, but they were soft back. One of the red ones had something to do with a cauldron rolling down a hill or something. Ring any bells? This was the early '80s.

Sounds very much like Janet and John books. Those were the days of easy reading! Janet liked John.
