Quantum Leap

Quantum Leap was a television series that revolved around the adventures of Sam Beckett (Scott Bakula) and Al (Dean Stockwell). Sam was a scientist who stepped into the Quantum Leap machine for the purposes of time travel and found himself stuck in time "leaping" around from person to person (sometimes male, sometimes female, sometimes old, sometimes young) through different periods of time (and sometimes different countries). He always tried to change that person's life for the better as they were always at a crisis when he leapt into their bodies. Al appeared to him at times as a hologram and provided him with information about the person's history and other useful information (as was a source of sarcasm).

It was amusing to see Dr Sam Beckett as a woman, tottering around on high heels or teaching some 'slimeball' a lesson by giving them an unexpected, 'manly' whack for misbehaviour. The way in which Sam 'leaped' was likened to a piece of string; representing his lifetime, tied so that it was a continuous loop, and he could end up anywhere within that loop. A leap would leave his memory like 'Swiss cheese', as Al, the observer explained, and a little 'ka ka'. Sam wasn't allowed to change history because of the repercussions. The way the last episode finished was disappointing with just a written explanation on screen, to tell you that because Sam chose to go back and do something; righting a wrong, for Al instead of taking the chance to leap home, he never did get back.
