Bands and musicians BANDS

Sailor

I first came across the quirky pop band Sailor when I heard their "Traffic Jam" non hit back in the early 70's. They were different - how many bands do you know that feature a nickelodeon on stage? - and played catchy Euro type pop, with vocals by one Georg Kajanus.

They did make the UK charts with the #2 hit "Glass of Champagne" in 1975, and followed this up with two other hits "Girls Girls Girls" and "One Drink Too Many". The album, "Trouble" features those hits and is worth checking out as a slice of 70s pop music.

Oddly, I also saw Sailor twice in one year, both times as support acts. Seeing them live back in 1975 playing support to Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel is a cherished teenage memory for me.

I'm one of the rare unusually young Sailor fans (born 1979) and have meanwhile seen them at 71 concerts. They had a big comeback over here in Germany in the 90s with new hits ("The Secretary", "La Cumbia"...) and are constantly touring. In the meantime I also run their fan club website www.sailor-music.com - Come aboard and have a look ;-)

I saw Sailor as support to the Kiki Dee Band at Birmingham Town Hall and again as headliners at the same venue. Fantastic live act. I bought all of their albums, which were great, and my friends thought I'd gone a bit weird as they only saw them as teenybopper group - but I knew different!!
