Shocking Laffs Hammer House of Horror Bubblegum Cards

Shocking Laffs Trading Cards were an obligatory request every time my father took me to the local newsagents in the mid-70s. Priced reasonably cheaply, each packet came with 4 or 5 cards, and a stick of hard pink bubblegum, the sort that it so brittle it breaks into shards when you try to chew it.The bubblegum was merely a distraction however, as the real payback for your concerted pesterpower was the opportunity to study the stills from classic Hammer Horror films. This always seemed like something a bit inappropriate for my young eyes, and I'm pretty sure if my Dad had taken any notice of the images on the cards, I wouldn't have been allowed them .As well as a brief glimpse into a forbidden world, you also got a corny joke on the back, and some not-so-amazing fact about the still on the reverse. There were apparently only 50 cards in total, and I soon moved on to Superman cards, and then the mighty Panini football sticker album, but Shocking Laffs were my first experience of the futlity of trying to 'collect them all' and are fondly remembered. Particularly the smell of the cheap bubblegum, which stayed on the cards for ever.
