Toys TOYS

Sky Dancers

Sky Dancers were fairy-type dolls which came in a wide range of styles, colours and sizes in the late 1990s. They had long plastic wings and they were positioned on a stand which had a button, if you pushed the button the doll would spin up into the air.

I found this article making claims about the popular dolls: "In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Galoob Toys Inc., of San Francisco, Calif., is recalling about 8.9 million Sky Dancers flying dolls. Galoob was purchased by Hasbro in 1998. The hard plastic Sky Dancers dolls can fly rapidly in unpredictable directions, and can hit and injure both children and adults. Galoob has received 170 reports of the dolls striking children and adults resulting in 150 reports of injuries. They include eye injuries, including scratched corneas and incidents of temporary blindness, broken teeth, a mild concussion, a broken rib, and facial lacerations that required stitches."

I didn't think they could be this dangerous. I know they did a wide range of products too as I had Sky Dancer bubble bath.

I had 2 and my sister had 3, including a baby one that flew out of a rabbit. If you can believe it, she broke a lightbulb with one! Mum and Dad were NOT happy and we were made to go play on the stairs! They were still around with my baby sister, but somewhere along the line what with all my toys and my big sister's toys and her own toys, the actual dolls got lost. I still have a launcher in my room though!

I had lots of fun with these outside in my front yard. They can be dangerous I guess, but if you use common sense, you will live I promise. Obviously you should have people stand back when releasing them.

Honestly, ALL toys can be dangerous in one way or another: whether by design or by accident. And all kids know that ANY toy can be dangerous if they play with it in the wrong way(s), or play wrongly. In this context, I think the backlash against Sky Dancers is a little unfair.

I hate these dolls. My Aunt thought it was appropriate to give them to my daughter when she was only 3 (she is 5 now) and she cried for hours because she could not make them work.
