Smash Hits Magazine

Smash Hits Magazine featured all the pop stars of the day and even had lyrics to all the chart hits. At one point Smash Hits had Neil Tennant of the Pet Shop Boys on its staff. It came out every other Thursday and was a must-buy for any music fan (well any music fan under 15!). It survived right up to 2006 but was never better than in its 80s heyday.

I'm not sure if they had this in the 80s, but in the mid-90s they included pull-out lyrics cards for songs in the charts, and you could call a number on the back to listen to the song over the phone. It was quite expensive, so I only managed to talk Mum into letting me do it once. To this day I still remember listening to a particularly fuzzy version of Aqua's "My Oh My" down the phone!

I used to cut out all the song words and keep them in a folder under my bed. I loved the huge posters especially the a-ha and duran duran ones

In the late months of 1999, Smash Hits magazine gave away a free VHS (in a bright pink box if I remember correctly) with pop videos on it. I think it included Steps' 'Better the Devil You Know', and definitely included Kim Lucas 'All I really Want'.

I was an avid reader from around 1987 to the early 90's, I used to have it delivered to my house every fortnight and loved reading it, the writing was so funny and eccentric, and I learnt several new words (including Blighty, I always remember for some reason!) Love the way they gave pop stars nicknames and asked them the most random stupid and often rude questions in interviews, 'Black Type' letters, and the song lyrics were a great idea and totally indisepnsible. My walls were contstantly covered in an ever changing assortment of cut-out single adverts and posters from it.LOVED IT.

In either the late months of 1999, or the early ones of 2000, the English magazine 'Smash Hits' gave away a free VHS (in a bright pink box if I remember correctly) with pop videos on it. I think - it included Steps' 'Better the Devil You Know', and I think it started with an N'Sync song and definitely included Kim Lucas - 'All I really Want', but the song I'm interested in came towards the end of the VHS. The song itself was sort of dancy, with a repetitive, quite high pitched melody, and the video had a similar CG styling to Dire Straits' 'Money for Nothing', with polygon style people moving around in a computer generated world. All of these people did the same thing, like mowing their lawns in synchronisation (at one point in the video) though I think there was a turning point in the video when one guy decides to go against the monotony of everyone else. Does ANYBODY Know the name of it or have said video?

That song was Gitta 'No More Turning Back'. The tracklist for the video was: N sync, 'I'll Never Stop' Kim Lukas, 'All I Really Want' Fe-M@il, 'Flee Fly Flo' The Parade, 'Terrorize the Dancefloor' Steps, 'Better the Devil You Know' Gitta, 'No More Turning Back' Don Philips, 'Sugar' Brittany Spears, 'Born to Make You Happy.' I know you posted nearly 7 years ago but if you check back, I hope that helps.

My bedroom was covered in stickers and lyrics from that magazine. My parents probably hate Smash Hits with a passion.

I thought those flexi disks were so cool - you had to put them on top of a normal single to play them. I had the Jet's crush on you aswell, but I got it from 'Look in'.

I loved getting the flexi disks in the issues. I played The Jet's - Crush On You until the plastic wore away.
