Space Raiders

This Memory is looking a little short on nostalgia! Have you got anything you could add?

An early Psion classic game for the ZX Spectrum. The blurb on the cassette case describes it as follows: "Defend the earth with your gun base from attack of successive waves of 55 aliens - a full feature, high resolution, reactive machine-code game in colour".

Wow - machine code eh! Must've been good!

I remember in the early days '100% machine code' was a big selling point for computer games, as there were so many shoddy BASIC games still being sold. I bought Space Raiders and it was indeed a pretty accurate version of the arcade game, but by the time it came out (1983) the whole Space Invaders hype (1979) had pretty much died down, and we wanted a more complex gaming experience for our money. This game was a bit of a disappointment for me.

I can remember the first time I played the colour arcade version of Space Invaders, and after a few goes, we realised that if you left one vertical line of invaders until the end, then shot them from top to bottom you could get bonus scores, I think it was 1000 points for shooting them in the correct order. After that it became a short step to work out that the spaceships scores were related to the number of shots you had taken. High scores became more of a numerical challenge, instead of a skill challenge
