Starsky and Hutch

Starsky and Hutch was the 1970s TV show about two Californian policemen named David Starsky (Paul Michael Glaser) and Ken "Hutch" Hutchinson (David Soul). The duo fought crime together across 92 episodes of the show from 1975 to 1979 chasing felons in their red 1975 Gran Torino with its distinctive white swoosh down the side.

The story lines were gritty and action packed and were often quite violent. However this was balanced by the close, almost brotherly, relationship between Starsky and Hutch.

In 1977, concern over violence on TV led to the reduction of action scenes and the increase of romance which ultimately led to a drop in popularity.

Never really understood the debate about too much violence in TV cop shows, especially if they were shown post watershed - which S&H was. That said it did become a little too samey after awhile, although the irrepressible Huggy Bear was always a delight.

This is what I stayed in on Saturday nights to watch, it was great entertainment! I remember lads at the time re-creating the white stripe down the side of their cars...mostly on mark 1 cortina's though.

This series seemed to be forever changing it's theme tune. I seem to remember at least three. The funky 70's incidental music is unforgettable though. The buddy-cop genre started here.
