The Real Ghostbusters

Based entirely on the 1984 Ghostbusters film, “The Real Ghostbusters” was an American produced animation that ran from 1986 to 1991.

The series follows the adventures of kooky and crazy paranormal investigators Dr. Peter Venkman, Dr. Egon Spengler, Dr. Ray Stantz, Winston Zeddemore, and their New York secretary Janine Melnitz. It also made a character of the ghost that haunted the old fire station in the original film. That ghost they called “Slimer” and kind of became a mascot for the crew. Slimer was almost like “Snarf” in Thundercats in that he was a comedy character – though he would of course always cover the characters in slime!

As an off-shoot of the off-shoot there were two Real Ghostbusters comics also produced at that time! One was in the US and one in the UK. But it really goes to show how popular and successful the Ghostbusters film was that it had some many franchises and merchandises off of it!

The animated cartoon was pretty much the film in conception – all of the characters maintained their original characteristics, with Venkman being all cool, and Spengler being the geek, the biggest difference was the inclusion of Slimer.

At the same time as “The Real Ghostbusters” was being made, rather controversially, Filmation was creating it’s own cartoon called "Ghostbusters. In fact, The “Real" in the cartoon’s title was added after a dispute with Filmation over the title “Ghostbusters”.
