The Sweater Shop

This Memory is looking a little short on nostalgia! Have you got anything you could add?

Does anyone remember the Sweater Shops in the late 80s / early 90s that were all over the country and used to sell various t-shirts and jumpers with the Sweater Shop written on them? Why did we all wear these?!

I remember getting a sweater shop jumper for my christmas, and actually being very EXCITED about it. What was I on? I mean, what was so great about a brightly coloured jumper with "the sweater shop" emblazioned on the front?

I am priviledged to know the Sweater Shop family who sold out in 1995 for circa £150m to a management company that sent it bust. The business was founded in 1973 and the owners, now 75, started as knitting machine mechanics in Leicester Hosiery firms. They now own yachts, private jets and helicopters and are wonderful people. I've only known them for 6-7 years and used to love the sweaters in the eighties. Has anyone thought that they were also responsible for the nice boutique bags which we now see so routinely on our High Street. If you had one of these and took it to school, you were really rocking!

Hi i worked for the sweater shop for many years, it makes me very happy to still see some people, still in the sweater shop garments. as the sweater shop went bust back in 1996. For me i loved working for them and it was like one big family. all the garments that were sold where pre washed, so they would not lose there shape. all of the sweater shop garments were made in the u.k from local products. and kept many people in leicester and the surounding regions in work as it was leicester based.

I still have my sweater shop jumper and still wear it. It is far to big but really comfy and just washes and washes.
