Derek Jarman's superb version of Shakespeare's penultimate play, set in a bleak coastal fortified mansion. Welsh actor Heathcote Williams is Prospero, with Toyah Wilcox as Miranda and Jack Birkett as an egg-sucking Caliban - grotesque but at the same time pitiful and strangely endearing. The film also features Karl Johnson, Christopher Biggins as an excellent Trincolo, and Peter Bull.
A truly memorable film, full of dense, eerie atmosphere, with plenty of shadowy candlelight, slowly-ticking clocks and crumbling passageways. Birkett and Wilcox had previously appeared in Jarman's punk satire 'Jubilee'.
