Triumph TR7s

This small sportscar was manufactured in the UK by The Triumph Motor Company, which was part of British Leyland during the 70's & 80's.

It was originally intended to carry the Dolomite engine transversly amidships, hence the pronounced wedge shape, budget constraints forced the adoption of a standard front engine-rear wheel drive layout, which compromised the handling. It did achieve a small amount of success in rallying, fitted with the Rover V8 engine as the TR8.

Purdey had one in the TV series 'The New Avengers' in the mid-'70s, a model kit of it was produced by Tamiya; so also did the Wildes in 'The Wilde Alliance'.

Not as bad as people say. Had a new one in 81' as well as the V8 addition.

I owned one for a couple of years and I thought it was great at the time but looking back it was a total pile of poo, badly built and a total rustbucket. They were a disgrace to the TR marque. Dolomite Sprints on the other hand, now you're talking...

One of my school mates described the TR7 as a 'poor man's sports car' but I still craved one when our head of year / games master bought a bright yellow one. I always thought the styling was very modern if not a little futuristic (for 1977) with it's pop up headlights and wedge shape design. I still have some affection for the car and since I now own a Triumph Spitfire I have learnt a lot more about the TR7 from owner members of the Triumph club. Such a shame it had to suffer from the curse of the BL production lines of the 70's. KJ
