We Are The Champions

This Memory is looking a little short on nostalgia! Have you got anything you could add?

We are the champions was the childrens' version of Superstars. Teams of windswept schoolchildren would compete against each other on a bleak playing field somewhere in a selection of events more akin to dog agility. the world is a poorer place without Ron Pickering and his stop watch.

I was one of the very lucky ones. We Are The Champions came to our school: Ounsdale High School, in Wombourne. And I got to be one of those shouting and cheering kids in the crowd. Fab fun. I've actually heard the great Ron Pickering shout "Away you go" right in front of me. A great moment of my life. Our school didn't win, as I think we came runner-up to some school from Biggleswade, or some other place I've never been to!

Brilliant programme. Started with two field games usually in a school or adjacent to the sweimming pool they were going to use later. There was then a really boring bit where the special guest would take questions like "what is your greatest achievement?" from the kids while sitting on the steps outside the leisure centre. Then the last two games were in the pool followed by Ron's legendary "Away you go!" command right at the end. All the kids would then leap into the pool from all sides, clambering up on the dinghies and rafts and clowning around while the end credits rolled. Total. total magic. Teams were identified by different coloured t-shirts with stripes and shapes on them. Games had names like "Keep your hat on" seemed pretty convoluted. Points were gained for collecting coconuts or by throwing temmis balls into baskeds, rings over poles, that sort of thing. Occasionally the special guest would blow a toy flute for some kind of bonus (can't remember what exactly). Ron was the complete professional and didn't allow any cheating or booing other teams. I seem to remember he always, without exception, described the pool they were about to use as "magnificent" I'd love to see this again. Anyone have any episodes on video?
