Wimpy

Before McDonald's and Burger King there was Wimpy. More or less the same thing but with lower hygiene standards, tables swimming with spilt drinks and the last customers leftover food! The staff were usually adults instead of teenagers but were just as interested in the soul destroying job. It was THE place to meet on Saturday afternoons 'dahn tahn' (if you came from Nottingham). It was purely a meeting place and you very rarely ate anything but no-one looked at you strangely if you weren't eating or drinking in there.

We still have a Wimpy locally and I think they're very good. Nice to have a plate and a knife and fork for fast food.

my very first experience of eating a "burger" was at a Wimpy when my aunt took me there. I remember the burger looking huge and she cut it into 4 and I can only recall managing to eat one of the quarters. We still have Wimpy restaurants and we check in from time to time - they still taste just as good especially when you wash it down with one of their thick strawberry milkshakes

As a kid, I used to think that a trip to a Wimpy Was 'dining in style'! A Wimpy Grill (burger, Bender, tomato, peas and chips) followed by flapjacks in maple syrup, man, that was living! How times change, eh? Anyone remember the Wimpy In Hemel Hempstead? On the first floor and there was NO ground floor ! Just a pool and a fountain! Coool!

So british!! a burger 'joint' where you had to eat off a plate with a knife and fork! well we thought we were cool in our ra-ra shirts and spiral perms. the one in cardiff is a burger king now and i don't think they've redecorated much so it still brings back memories! tho the playing card motif on the tables are gone!

There are still a few Wimpys around the UK. Still using proper plates and still serving bendy sausages. Trouble is, the nearest one to me is in the middle of the most hellish 60's shopping centre imaginable.
