World Championship Wrestling

Every Saturday afternoon just before tea-time World Championship Wrestling was on. A favourite show for the dads and brothers - although it was quite common to see old ladies in the front row of the audience waving sticks and handbags at the wrestlers!

"Big Daddie" and "Giant Haystacks" were two of the most well-known wrestlers from this sports show.

Well for me the only World Championship Wrestling I remember is the USA version, however I do remember the Saturday afternoon wrestling and the Big Daddy/Giant Haystacks rivalry and there is a DVD out there somewhere "the best of ITV wrestling" which I am trying to find

well i was born in 1983 so am too young for british wrestling but grew up watching WCW and WWF now the WWE. i started watching wrestling in 1988 when i got some NWA videos for christmas and saw someones tape of WWF Wrestlemania 4. NWA Jim Crockett promtions the forerunner to WCW which was created out of Crockett in 1988 by Ted Turner. i have always perfered the WWF/E but did watch WCW and watched it most until 1994 when i got cable and could watch WWF. Before that i could only watch WWF on tapes taped off sky by my mate or my many shop brought tapes. I watched WCW on saturday afternoons during the football results on ITV and on ITV on Monday nights way past my bed time at 1:30am i taped it more than watched it at 1:30 am though. It got moved to Fridays after the Hitman and Her another class show. I would watch WCW Monday Nitro on Fridays at 9pm on TNT after cartoon network finished. I watch it for an hour then turn over to the WWF Monday Night Raw or Raw is War as it was later known on Sky Sports 3 at 10pm . During the adverts me and my mate would turn back to Nitro is see what was going on and keep on either Raw or Nitro depending on what was most interesing. However during the great year 1998 we kept on Raw nearly all the time as with Stone Cold Steve Austin and DX it was easier the better of the two. I remember when DX invaded the outside of the Nitro arena in April 1998 it really angered WCW boss Eric Bishoff. He then challenged WWF boss Vince McMahon to a fight. The real rivaly and war between WCW and the WWF was great me and my mate would always support the WWF but enjoyed Nitro and miss it now that WCW has been brought out by the WWF/E. The last Nitros were shown at the same time but on Bravo instead of TNT and i remember the WWF has brought it out for the last one and Vince was on Nitro taunting them and it was surreal. What was even more surreal was in 2002 when Eric Bishoff began working for WWF/E a company he said he rather chop his hands off than work for. Still he is a great onscreen character. The glory years for wrestling were 1996 to 2001 when the Monday Night Wars(or Friday Night Wars in the UK) were in full flow between Raw and Nitro two great shows head to head the wrestling fan was the winner then. Raw is still on the air in the UK live from America every Monday Night at 2am on Sky Sports 3. Smackdown is shown in the UK as well before it is in America every Friday night at 9pm on Sky Sports 3. WCW worldwide on channel 5 was awful it was an hour long cut down version of Nitro that was censored with 60's batman style POW! signs and 6 months behind the showings on UK TNT. UK TNT showings of Nitro was only 4 days behind the American ones. I still watch wrestling to this day and love it just as much and have loads of both pre taped and brought videos and dvds.
