Mike & Angelo

Mike & Angelo was a long-running and popular CITV series, a sitcom that ran from 1989 to 2000. It was produced originally by Thames Television, then after their franchise loss by Tetra Films for Carlton Television. It was created by Lee Pressman and Grant Cathro, the writers behind T-Bag, Spatz and episodes of the 1990s The Tomorrow People. It concerned an alien called Angelo who came to Earth via a wardrobe and had a tendency to walk on ceilings, invent time machines and the like and cause general havoc for a boy called Mike. As with Spatz, there were both British and North American characters to give the series dual appeal. The original Angelo was played by Tyler Butterworth, son of Peter of Carry On fame. Mike's mother, Rita completed the original trio. Angelo regenerated, Doctor Who-style into Tim Whitnall during the first episode of Series 3, with later series seeing no fewer than three new Mikes (not meant to be the same character - one was a girl, Michaela!) and Rita's role taken over by housekeeper Katy. The humour was in some respects similar to Watt on Earth, based around a powerful alien visitor struggling to understand life on Earth, though while Watt was a drama, Mike & Angelo was played for laughs, and usually got them. As in T-Bag, other forms of TV show, whether sci-fi, fantasy or drama, were parodied for comic effect. Fondly remembered by many.
